To follow along with this article, you will need establish an account with Play with Docker. I will cover Docker containers in future blogs. I will not go into depth in this article about Docker containers. This website also allows you to use Docker to quickly test a proof of concept. This sentence is word for word from the start page of Play with Docker. Play with Docker is a simple, interactive and fun playground to learn Docker.

Although nginx can load balance using ip_hashing or weighted load balancing, I will stick to simple round robin for this exercise. One nginx container as the load balancer and three web containers to demonstrate the simple round robin concept of load balancing. To demonstrate this concept, I will use the Play with Docker platform to create a node and four containers. If you have multiple web servers in a virtual environment or as containers, using nginx to balance the load is a good option. The reason you may want to do this is a hardware load balancer is expensive and your setup may not even let you install a hardware load balancer.

nginx can also be used as a load balancer which is what I will explain how to do in this article. Nginx is an http server and reverse proxy.
